In the early hours of Saturday, June 6, two people lost their lives in a head-on collision on Interstate 10 in Madison County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 1 a.m. on the eastbound side of I-10 near Greenville, when a driver traveling the wrong direction struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, and all eastbound lanes were closed for several hours before reopening.
Our hearts are with the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. As a Florida personal injury firm, we see the devastating aftermath of wrong-way crashes far too often — and we believe the most meaningful thing we can offer the community right now is clear information about why these collisions are so deadly and what rights families have when the worst happens.
Why Wrong-Way Crashes Are Among the Deadliest on the Road
Wrong-way collisions are statistically rare, but they are catastrophically violent. Because both vehicles are usually traveling at highway speed, the combined force of a head-on impact is far greater than in most other crash types. They also tend to happen at night and in the early morning hours, when visibility is low, traffic is light, and drivers have the least time to react. The result is a crash that is frequently fatal for everyone involved — even people who did absolutely nothing wrong.
How to Protect Yourself From a Wrong-Way Driver
You can’t control another driver’s choices, but a few habits can give you precious seconds to avoid a head-on collision:
- Stay in the right or center lanes when possible at night. Wrong-way drivers most often end up in what they believe is the “slow” lane — which is the fast lane for oncoming traffic.
- Keep your eyes far down the road, not just on the car ahead. Spotting headlights coming at you early is the difference between reacting and reeling.
- Reduce speed and increase following distance in the overnight hours, when impaired and drowsy driving peak.
- If you see a wrong-way driver, slow down, move right, and call 911. Get off at the next exit if you safely can.
- Never drive impaired or drowsy. Many wrong-way crashes involve a driver who was impaired, disoriented, or fatigued.
Victims’ Rights After a Fatal Florida Crash
When a loved one is killed in a crash caused by another driver, Florida’s wrongful death laws allow surviving family members to seek accountability and compensation. A wrongful death claim can cover funeral and burial costs, medical expenses incurred before death, lost financial support and benefits, and the loss of companionship, guidance, and protection that the family has suffered. These claims are not about replacing a person — nothing can — but about easing the financial weight that lands on a grieving family and holding responsible parties accountable.
It is also important to know that Florida has strict deadlines for filing these claims, and critical evidence — vehicle data, toxicology results, roadway and signage records, and witness accounts — can disappear quickly. Families who are even considering their options are usually best served by speaking with an attorney early, while that evidence can still be preserved.
