In the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 13, 2026, a 16-year-old girl from Riviera Beach lost her life in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 95. Her family woke up to a phone call no parent should ever receive. At Kaiser Romanello Accident & Injury Attorneys, our hearts are with her loved ones, with the other drivers who lived through those terrifying moments, and with every Palm Beach County family touched by this tragedy.

We want to share what we know about the crash, why these multi-vehicle highway collisions are so dangerous — and, most importantly, what families and survivors of similar accidents need to understand about their legal rights in Florida.

What we know about the I-95 Riviera Beach crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash unfolded just before 12:30 a.m. at Exit 76, Blue Heron Boulevard, on I-95 North.

The teen was driving a Nissan Altima northbound when she reportedly lost control of the car. The Altima struck a guardrail and a concrete wall before coming to a stop in the roadway. She got out of the disabled vehicle and was leaning into the back seat when a BMW X3 — driven by a 21-year-old man from Jupiter — slammed into the stopped car. The impact threw her onto the shoulder of the highway. She did not survive.

A third driver, a 49-year-old man from Port St. Lucie, swerved to avoid the wreck but still struck the Altima before hitting a concrete wall. He was not injured. The BMW driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital. All lanes had reopened by 6:10 a.m. FHP’s investigation is ongoing.

The hidden danger: secondary impacts on Florida highways

Most people picture a “car crash” as a single, violent collision. But on a high-speed interstate like I-95, the first impact is often only the beginning. When a vehicle becomes disabled — especially in a travel lane, at night, or in low-visibility conditions — the seconds that follow are some of the most dangerous a driver, passenger, or first responder can experience.

A driver who survives the initial wreck may step out to check for injuries, retrieve a phone, or wave down help — and instantly become a pedestrian in a 70-mph environment, often without the protective barrier of a vehicle around them. Other motorists, traveling at highway speed in the dark, have only a fraction of a second to recognize a stopped car and react. Chain-reaction crashes — sometimes called secondary collisions — happen in that narrow gap between the first impact and the next.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data consistently shows that secondary crashes are far more likely to be fatal than primary ones. The Riviera Beach crash is a heartbreaking example of how quickly an initial loss-of-control incident can turn deadly.

What Florida law gives the family of a fatal-crash victim

In Florida, the family of someone killed in a motor vehicle collision has the right to pursue a claim under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (Fla. Stat. §§ 768.16–768.26). A wrongful death case is separate from the criminal investigation and from any traffic citations that may be issued. It exists to provide the surviving family — typically parents of a minor child, a spouse, or surviving children — a path to financial recovery and accountability.

Depending on the circumstances, recoverable damages can include:

  • The value of lost support, companionship, and parental guidance
  • Mental pain and suffering of the surviving parents from the date of the injury
  • Medical and funeral expenses paid by the family
  • Lost net accumulations of the estate, in certain cases

In a multi-vehicle crash like the one on I-95, more than one driver — and more than one insurance policy — may bear responsibility. A thorough investigation often reveals that fault is not where it first appears. Speed, distraction, impairment, following distance, and even highway lighting or roadway design can all play a role. Identifying every responsible party is often the difference between a small settlement and one that actually supports a grieving family.

It is also important to know that Florida has a statute of limitations on wrongful death claims, and critical evidence — black-box data, dashcam footage, surveillance from nearby businesses, and physical roadway debris — disappears quickly. Families considering their options should not wait long to speak with a lawyer.

Survivors of similar crashes have rights, too

Fatal crashes draw the headlines, but the BMW driver in this case was hospitalized, and the third driver narrowly escaped injury. South Florida sees collisions like this every week — chain-reaction wrecks on I-95, the Florida Turnpike, I-595, and I-75 — where drivers walk away with broken bones, concussions, spinal injuries, or worse.

If you have been injured in a multi-vehicle accident — whether you were the first car, the second, or somewhere down the chain — you may be entitled to recover for:

  • Emergency room bills and ongoing medical care
  • Lost wages and reduced earning capacity
  • Pain, suffering, and emotional distress
  • Property damage and rental car costs
  • Future medical care for lasting injuries

Florida’s no-fault insurance system means your own PIP coverage pays first, regardless of who caused the crash. But PIP benefits run out fast, and serious injuries almost always require a claim against the at-fault driver’s bodily injury policy. Sorting out whose insurance pays what — when three or four vehicles are involved — is exactly the kind of work an experienced personal injury attorney exists to do.

What to do after a serious highway crash

If you or someone close to you has been involved in a chain-reaction or fatal Florida crash, a few steps will protect your rights:

  • Get medical attention immediately, even if you feel “okay” — adrenaline masks serious injuries
  • Request a copy of the Florida Traffic Crash Report when it becomes available (typically 7–10 days)
  • Photograph everything — your vehicle, the scene, your injuries — and save your medical records
  • Do not give a recorded statement to another driver’s insurance company before talking to a lawyer
  • Preserve any dashcam footage, phone records, and witness contact information

A word on highway safety

Crashes like the one in Riviera Beach are a reminder of why Florida’s Move Over Law exists, why staying inside a disabled vehicle (with seatbelt fastened and hazards on) is almost always safer than stepping out onto a live highway, and why slowing down at night — especially on dark stretches of I-95 — saves lives. We share this not to assign blame, but because the lessons of every tragedy deserve to be carried forward.
