Our hearts are heavy today. On Saturday evening, a catastrophic head-on collision on Harborview Road in Charlotte County took the lives of two people—one of them a twelve-year-old girl—and left another driver fighting for his life with critical injuries. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred after the driver of a pickup truck fled the scene of an earlier, separate collision and re-entered traffic at an extremely high rate of speed.
Tragedies like this one remind us, in the most painful way possible, that a single act of reckless driving can destroy families in an instant. At Kaiser Romanello Accident & Injury Attorneys, we believe that every victim and every grieving family deserves answers—and, when another party’s negligence caused their suffering, justice.
What Happened on Harborview Road
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol and confirmed by multiple local news outlets, the chain of events began at the intersection of Kings Highway and Veterans Boulevard in Charlotte County. A 25-year-old man from Lake Placid was involved in a minor crash at that intersection—one that did not produce any injuries. Rather than remain on scene as Florida law requires, the driver allegedly fled.
Troopers report that the man then traveled south on Interstate 75 before exiting onto Harborview Road, where he continued at a high rate of speed. As he approached a right-hand curve—a stretch of roadway that area residents have long considered dangerous—he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound 2001 Chevrolet Malibu.
The force of the impact was devastating. The 25-year-old pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Tragically, a 12-year-old girl who was riding as a passenger in the Malibu was also pronounced dead at the scene. The 44-year-old Port Charlotte man driving the Malibu sustained critical injuries and was transported to a hospital for emergency treatment. As of this writing, the FHP has not publicly released the names of those involved, and the investigation remains active.

A Road with a Dangerous Reputation
Saturday’s tragedy did not occur in a vacuum. Residents who live along Harborview Road have spoken out repeatedly about the dangers of this corridor—particularly the curve near the Interstate 75 exit ramp. Neighbors have described the stretch as a recurring site of serious crashes, and some have gone so far as to call it a “death curve.”
The concerns raised by residents point to a broader issue. When drivers exit a high-speed interstate onto a road with tight or deceptive curves, the transition can create a dangerous mismatch between driver speed and roadway design. This is especially true at night, when visibility is reduced and the consequences of excessive speed are amplified.
As a firm that handles complex car accident cases across Florida, we have seen firsthand how dangerous road design—combined with reckless driving behavior—produces devastating outcomes. If you or someone you love has been injured on a road you believe is unreasonably hazardous, our experienced Florida car accident attorneys can help you determine whether government entities or other parties may share liability for the conditions that contributed to your crash.
Leaving the Scene of a Crash: Florida Law and Consequences
One of the most troubling aspects of this tragedy is the allegation that the pickup driver fled the scene of an earlier collision before causing the fatal crash on Harborview Road. Under Florida Statute § 316.061, any driver involved in a crash resulting in property damage is required to stop at the scene, provide identifying information, and render aid if needed. When an individual leaves the scene and subsequently causes further harm, the legal consequences—and potential civil liability—can be severe.
In our practice handling serious and fatal motor vehicle collision cases, we have seen how the decision to flee a crash scene often escalates an already dangerous situation. Panic, impaired judgment, and excessive speed create a lethal combination that puts every other driver on the road at risk.
Why Head-On Collisions Are Among the Deadliest Crashes
Head-on collisions represent a relatively small percentage of all motor vehicle crashes, but they account for a disproportionately high number of traffic fatalities. The physics are straightforward: when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide, the combined closing speed can be enormous, and the energy transferred to occupants is catastrophic. Even modern safety systems—airbags, crumple zones, seatbelts—can be overwhelmed in a high-speed frontal impact.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has consistently identified head-on collisions as one of the most lethal crash configurations. When speed, reckless driving, or impairment are added to the equation, the survivability of these crashes drops dramatically. For families who lose loved ones to head-on collisions caused by another driver’s negligence, a wrongful death claim may provide a path toward accountability and financial recovery.
Pickup Trucks, Commercial Vehicles, and Heightened Risk
While the vehicle involved in this crash was a pickup truck rather than a large commercial vehicle, the principles of vehicle size and weight disparity apply in many serious collisions. Larger, heavier vehicles inflict greater damage on smaller passenger cars in a collision. When a pickup truck—or any larger vehicle—is operated recklessly, the occupants of the smaller vehicle bear the worst of the impact.
Our firm has extensive experience handling truck accident cases in Florida, including collisions involving commercial trucks, tractor-trailers, and oversized vehicles. We understand the unique dynamics of crashes involving vehicles of unequal size and the devastating injuries they inflict on occupants of smaller vehicles. If you have been injured in a collision with a truck or large vehicle, our truck accident lawyers can evaluate your case and help you pursue the compensation you deserve.
Wrongful Death Claims in Florida: What Families Need to Know
When a loved one is killed because of another person’s negligence or reckless conduct, Florida law allows surviving family members to pursue a wrongful death claim. Under Florida Statute § 768.19, the personal representative of the deceased’s estate may bring an action on behalf of the estate and the surviving family members.
A wrongful death claim can seek compensation for funeral and burial expenses, lost financial support and future earnings, loss of the deceased’s companionship, guidance, and mentorship, as well as the pain and suffering endured by survivors. In a case like the Harborview Road tragedy—where a child’s life was cut short and a father may face a long and painful recovery—the financial and emotional toll on a family is immeasurable.
It is important to understand that Florida’s tort reform legislation (HB 837), enacted in 2023, introduced significant changes to how personal injury and wrongful death cases are handled in this state. Among other reforms, the law modified the comparative fault framework and adjusted how damages are calculated in certain claims. Families navigating the wrongful death process need an attorney who thoroughly understands these changes and can build the strongest possible case within the current legal landscape.
